apples, apples everywhere

We had so much fun talking about apples!
We went on a short field trip to the George's house to pick some apples. Their apple tree is perfect for preschoolers. There are lots of apples available, they are little apples, and they are close to the ground for picking. We told them don't pick the ones off the ground, they may have worms, but pick as many as you want. They had fun picking them!
As you can see the tree was loaded with apples!

They liked to try to pick the "little ones".

Getting a bag full was pretty easy!
When we got back we talked about
all the different things you can make out of apples.
Yum!
Apple pie, muffins, applesauce, eat them plain,
eat them with peanut butter or caramel,
apple fritters, fruit leather, dried apples
apple juice or cider.
We tried some of those for our snack.

One of my favorite parts of apple day is getting several different kinds of apples and letting the kids try them. As you can see we had several different kinds of apples to try, a couple of kinds I had never heard of - tango?
Golden Delicious, braeburn, Fuji, granny smith, good thing they have labels on them!
Most of the kids liked them all, a few didn't like the tart ones.
(FYI - the George's apples are crab apples)

I also showed them if you cut the apple in half the other way it shows a star.

Yum!

Granny smith?! A sour one!

For our craft we painted apple trees.
The apples are finger prints.
They were told to take one finger and dip it into the paint to make apples.
We told them if they were very careful and
only used one finger to paint that they wouldn't have to wear a paint shirt.
